After looking for an alternative to dry kibble dog food and high moisture content canned foods, I have come across 2 product lines that fit well with our philosophies. It is pretty well documented that dogs and cats do very well, if not better on raw diets. Most research verifies it and the conclusion is that for pets, raw food is safe, very healthy and can actually repair or prevent a lot of diet related problems. I have believed in it for several years, but the reality is that most of us do not want to take the time to prepare a fresh raw meal each and every day for our pets. We love them, but time is a factor and most of us don't have enough of it to fix family meals, much less pet meals. Safety is the other concern I have always had about raw diets. Salmonella is not an issue for most pets, but for humans it is a real problem. Fresh, raw diets require lots of cleaning up afterwards. Frozen raw diets are a little better, but anything that comes in contact with the product or package should be cleaned thoroughly.
The other item I have looked at is the use of canned products. Most of us like to soil our pets and give them a little canned food as a flavor enhancer, or to just show a little extra love. So we buy a good quality dry kibble, but either buy a very inexpensive canned food at the grocery store, we are just using it as a flavor enhancer anyway, or we buy the more expensive canned products at the pet store but are not really sure if it a real help. On top of that, canned products are messy, stinky, no one likes them in the refrigerator, icky on our hands, not really environmentally friendly, bulky, expensive (consider that 70-80 % is water).
Enter dehydrated products. Not freeze dried, but gently dehydrated. I have researched them, examined them, tried them. They are easy to use.
Here is the mixing and usage guide for Honest Kitchen
Mix 1 cup food with 1-1.5 cups of warm water. Stir well and let hydrate 5-10 minutes. Mix in your pet's choice of vegetables, fruit, raw or cooked meats or raw meaty bones - or serve just as it is!
And here is the SoJos guide
Combine Sojos Complete with water. Let soak in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (preferably overnight) and serve. You can mix a four-day batch ahead of time and refrigerate in a sealed container or keep larger batches in the freezer. Shake bag occasionally to keep ingredients mixed. For adult and geriatric dogs we recommend once-a-day feeding. For puppies we recommend twice-a-day feeding. (For twice-a-day feeding, split the amounts below in half.) Measurements are listed in cups.
As you can see, they are easy to use, Honest Kitchen is a little easier a sort of 1 to 1 ratio, SoJos is a little better pricing. We do have multiple flavors in the Honest Kitchen along with some 4 oz "Travel" size packets.
Pricing on them are as follows. We are only stocking small sizes right now to maintain freshness. Larger sizes will be added if needed, but if you are using it as a can replacement, these sizes will replace many cans of food.
